The Global Esports Federation (GEF) has announced the games that will be played in the tournament ahead of the opening of the Commonwealth Esports Championships (CEC), which will take place in August 2022.

At the event, players will compete in Dota 2, eFootball, and Rocket League.

The event will take place at the International Convention Center in Birmingham between 6-7 August and will see players from the Commonwealth countries compete for medals at their respective games. All three games will feature a women’s category and an open category.

“Alongside the GEF, we are delighted to unveil three major titles for the Commonwealth Esports Championships in Birmingham this summer. There is no doubt this innovative and exciting event will create new learnings and opportunities for us to further explore esports.”

Katie Sadleir, CEO of the Commonwealth Games Federation

In addition to the event, the two sides will host the Commonwealth Esports Forum at the same venue on August 5. The CEC will act as a separate entity from the Commonwealth Games that will take place in the Summer.

“Esports has connected millions of young people across the Commonwealth, providing entertainment and a vital sense of community. The Commonwealth Esports Championships is a major vote of confidence in the West Midlands’ and UK’s thriving esports industry and an exciting chance to look at how this can be brought into the Commonwealth Sport Movement.”

Nigel Huddleston, Commonwealth Games Minister

The selection of Dota 2, eFootball and Rocket League games seem like good options to introduce esports to an audience unfamiliar with the industry. Depending on the success of the event, it will be interesting to see if there will be more similar esports events alongside traditional sporting events.

Esports tournament organizer BLAST entered in to FIFA esports scene by announcing that it would be producing the 2021/22 ePremier League season.

The ePremier League is an esports league organized by publisher Electronic Arts and the UK’s top football league, the Premier League, and has 20 teams. Representatives from clubs will compete for the £100,000 prize pool allocated to the league’s PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S divisions.

According to the statement, BLAST will use its experience of hosting tournaments in other games to help shape the FIFA 22 series. This includes providing tailor-made experiences for the FIFA 22 community and Premier League fans.

The ePremier League Grand Final will take place on March 26-27.

BLAST is best known for the CS:GO esports league BLAST Premier. However, the tournament organizer has recently expanded to other games as well, notably Apex Legends and Fortnite.

“We’re thrilled to team up with the world’s most renowned football league, and help them create, develop and deliver this season’s ePremier League. We’re excited at the prospect of engaging with fans from all 20 clubs as they compete to represent their favourite team at the live Grand Finals.”

Leo Matlock, MD of Development at BLAST

Last year, EA SPORTS made some major esports ecosystem changes as part of FIFA 22. The esports roadmap now focuses on three major competitions: FIFAe Club Series 2022, FIFAe Nations Series 2022 and EA SPORTS FIFA 22 Global Series. The ePremier League is part of FIFA 22’s Global Series.

This is a very important move for FIFA’s esports scene. It will be interesting to see what an organizer like BLAST will do in this space.

Team Gullit, the Netherlands-based FIFA academy, announced that it has partnered with Samsung, one of the world’s largest electronics manufacturers.

As part of the deal, Samsung will be Team Gullit’s first jersey sponsor for FIFA 22. The team’s new jersey will officially go on sale on October 21.

The Samsung brand will appear on players’ jerseys in all of Team Gullit‘s FIFA 22 matches next season. Besides in-game content, both organizations announced that they will collaborate on events, videos and giveaways.

Gerben van Walt Meijer, Mobile Marketing Manager at Samsung Netherlands, said:

When it comes to innovation and marketing, Samsung is more than happy to get the ball rolling. As the first shirt sponsor of Team Gullit, we contribute to a new generation of FIFA players through the FIFA academy and numerous activations.

We are looking forward to making this a success!

Team Gullit players Levi de Weerd and Dani Visser became Samsung’s game ambassadors.

The team’s jersey was featured in FIFA 21 thanks to its good performance at last year’s FIFA Global Series tournament. Team’s jersey will be available for players to choose once again in FIFA Ultimate Team.

Corné Dubelaar, the team’s founder, said:

I am extremely proud that we will work with Samsung. This deal shows the growth of Team Gullit. We now have the prestige and reach of a top international team.

It’s cool to see that Samsung is also one of the first companies to invest into the esports domain with in-game shirt sponsorship.

The partnership between Team Gullit and Samsung was established by 2Basics The Invaders.

Kevin Loos, leader of The Invaders team, said:

We get brands in touch with gamers. The starting point of the partnership is Samsung’s in-game integration into the FIFA game.

Through the collaboration with Team Gullit, we create an entrance for Samsung during the ‘game moment’ of young people.

Through this collaboration, Samsung can build a lasting relationship with this group through the touchpoint that is gaming.

Guild Esports announced a new partnership with cult favorite Finn Harps FC, one of the lowest-ranked teams in EA SPORTS FIFA history. New sponsorship will see the Esports organization, co-owned by David Beckham, work with Finn Harps FC to grow the fanbase and create authentic activations in Ireland.

The new partnership will see Finn Harps work with Guild Esports to encourage Irish EA SPORTS FIFA gaming talent to join Guild’s world-class esports academy, helping them become esports stars of tomorrow, as well as branding on Harps’ first and second replica kits and on EA SPORTS FIFA 22, alongside a series of fan-led activations featuring Harps players and club staff with Guild athletes.

Founded in 1954, Finn Harps FC is a member-owned, community football club based in Ballybofey, County Donegal, at the club’s home ground of Finn Park. Playing in the Premier Division of the League of Ireland (SSE Airtricity League), the team rose to prominence during the 1970s, winning the FAI Cup in the 1973-74 season, and picked up a cult following that grew as Harps featured in EA SPORTS FIFA games in the early 2000’s onwards.

Guild regularly features Harps in their viral EA SPORTS FIFA show FFFFFFF, adding to the cult following the club has built up over the years, and achieving millions of views for Season One.

This new partnership between Harps and Guild will continue to grow that reputation, through Guild branding on both Harps’ first and second replica kits and on EA SPORTS FIFA 22, alongside a series of fan-led activations featuring Harps players and club staff with Guild athletes.

Guild will also see a presence around Finn Park, as the esports organization will feature prominently across matchday programs, advertising hoardings and the club’s digital and social media channels during the partnership, with the opportunity for a further year to follow.

Michelle Tierney, Chief Commercial Officer at Guild Esports said:

“We’re immensely proud of this unique partnership, and the opportunities it will offer for both Guild and Harps to create impact in Ireland’s growing esports scene. Harps have built a truly amazing reputation and following as everyone’s second favourite team on EA SPORTS FIFA, and we want to use this partnership to expand that reputation even further, and to position Guild as everyone’s favourite esports team!”

Aidan Campbell, Marketing Officer at Finn Harps, said:

“We would like to welcome everyone from Guild into the Finn Harps family. This partnership offers some genuinely exciting possibilities for Finn Harps and it began when we learned we had attracted a cult following on Guild’s FIFA show. This led to a series of meetings between our media/marketing team and Guild about the possibilities of working together on projects that could harness the huge crossover between live football and the Irish esports community.

“The team at Guild impressed us from day one with their mission and drive to offer something new to esports, so we are really looking forward to working with them to develop the many exciting ideas we have planned. We’ve had alternative offers for shirt sponsorship, but we felt this represented an unprecedented opportunity to create initiatives that will engage a younger audience with the League of Ireland.”

This new partnership with Finn Harps FC is the latest development in an exciting year for Guild which has seen them sign major partnerships with Subway, Samsung and HyperX and launched the Guild Academy, an online platform that gives personalized coaching plans to the esports stars of tomorrow. Guild has also launched an apparel line with a reinterpretation of Guild’s signature logo designed by Fergus Purcell — known for his work on Palace’s iconic Penrose logo.
